Marriage is pretty tough even with functioning toilets. So, it’s a no brainer why Jaya gives an ultimatum to her husband Keshav; He either installs a toilet in their home or she leaves him.

9| Dear Zindagi (2016)

Dear Zindagi is all about finding the beauty and comfort in life’s imperfections. This movie is a heartwarming story about a twenty-something girl who wants to become a filmmaker while still looking to find herself.

She has a rather unexpected date that will change her perception of life forever. Dear Zindagi is a bit different than most Bollywood romantic movies and while it has romantic elements it’s mostly about finding love in life.

Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt both did an excellent job and created two exciting and easily relatable characters.

8| Wake Up Sid (2009)

It’s a really fun romantic Bollywood movie with Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma.

Ranbir’s character Sid is a super annoying spoiled man-child who fails his last year in college. His father wants him to work and gain some life experience but after a big fight, he leaves home only with his clothes.

He decides to visit Aisha, a young girl he recently met and helped to settle in Mumbai. Sid finally realizes that things aren’t’ just given to everyone in life. Aisha helps him to finally grow up.

While I found it hard to relate to Sid it’s a really enjoyable movie, with great acting and good jokes.

7| Love Per Square Foot (2018)

This quirky romantic movie is about finding love when you least expect it. Sanjay and Karina have the same goal to live in the city of their dreams, Mumbai. Unfortunately, none of them can afford it on their own so they enter a marriage of convenience.

It’s a light-hearted story about finding one’s place in the world.

6| Love and Shukla (2017)

Shukla is a rickshaw driver, raised in an orthodox Brahmin family. His life turns upside down after her mother suddenly arranges him to get married.

Shukla who has never seen a woman naked has to find intimacy while living with his family in a small flat and in a room where only a wall of suitcases provides them privacy from his parents. The new couple has to find a way to get to know each other and experience love the first time without any personal space in a massive city of 18 million eyes.

The directing and the acting is wonderful in the movie, however, it’s not a fluffy romantic comedy. Its tone is often depressing and also deals with the unjust gender politics that still affects most (Indian) people.

5| Jab We Met (2007)

The age-old tale with an annoying heroine and a cute (and of course wealthy) hero. But don’t worry it’s a likable version. Jab We Met is a joy from the start and will give you plenty of laughs.

After Aditya a burnt out businessman meets the carefree Geet on a train his life changes forever. Together they embark on a journey filled with twists and laughter.

4| Piku (2015)

It’s a wonderful movie about love and constipation. A story about Piku a successful architect and her aging, eccentric father. Getting a life of her own seems impossible because responsibilities of her work, home, and a hypochondriac father weigh her down.

They’re both being strong headed and stubborn but also deeply attached to one another. One day Piku’s father Bhaskor emotionally blackmails her to take a road trip from Delhi to native Calcutta. That’s when Rana the owner of the local cab company gets into the picture.

Together they learn to deal with each other’s moods, idiosyncrasies, and of course, Piku finally finds love as well.

It’s a beautiful, quirky story about love and father-daughter relationships with a slice of romance on the side (And lots of toilet humor… in a good way.).

3| The Lunchbox (2013)

The Lunchbox is a delightful tale about loneliness and the power and beauty of Platonic love.

The story is about Ila, a lonely housewife who tries to get back his husband’s attention through her cooking. Mistakenly, her daily lunchboxes get delivered to Saajan an isolated man on the verge of retirement. Together they build a fantasy world through notes in the lunchbox.

2| Barfi! (2012)

With gorgeous visual storytelling, fantastic acting, a bittersweet story, and beautiful homages to Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin Barfi! is a perfect choice for a romantic movie night.

The story is mostly set in Darjeeling where Barfi a charming deaf boy falls in love with two girls and their often trying but inspiring and unique relationships turn his life upside down. Barfi! is a beautiful movie about self-love, selfless love, and finding happiness in the smallest of things.

Don’t worry be Barfi!

The three leading actors (Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D’Cruz) were all perfect in their characters but the real heart stealing is committed by Ranbir and Priyanka.

1| PK (2014)

This film is many things… is a uniquely original (and fun) exploration of complex philosophies, but it’s mainly about love, friendships, laughter, and letting go.

PK, a humanoid alien arrives at earth to observe humans. His first interaction with us happens when a man steals his only device he can use to communicate with his spaceship. Since PK can’t leave, he starts a years-long journey to find his device so he can finally get home.

While both actors Anushka Sharma and Aamir Khan did an amazing job with their characters Aamir clearly steals the show. PK is just as funny and charming as he is weird.
